Charter panel opens forums, defers government-form study

Other Committee · Meeting of August 12, 2026

Bridgewater's Charter Review Committee opened public forums without taking up a change in town government. Chair Scott Pitta said the panel, required to review the charter every six years, has until May 2027 to send recommendations to the Town Council and will not study alternative government forms itself, though it could recommend the council form a separate study committee. Residents Grace Lawson and Joe Gillis pressed for better town communication, with Lawson saying feedback "throwing things up in the air and never knowing where it's landing." Discussion also covered a conflict-of-interest recusal by the town's single attorney and a debate, led by councilors Mary and Adeline Ellenberg, over converting Bridgewater's seven-district, two-at-large council to all districts.

No votes were taken; two more forums are set for August 24 and September 12.
