Treasurer: Bridgewater Pension Funding Pushed to 2032

Other Committee · Meeting of August 18, 2026

Bridgewater's pension liability grows to $38.9 million as full funding slips to 2032. Plymouth County Treasurer Thomas O'Brien and Commissioner Sandra Wright told the Finance Committee that revised mortality tables and payroll growth across the Plymouth County Retirement Association's 52 member units pushed the system's funding deadline back a year, raising Bridgewater's average annual assessment increase to roughly 9.75 percent. The town's fiscal 2027 pension bill is $7,113,743; O'Brien said that drops to about $1.7 million once the system is fully funded, saving roughly $5 million a year.

"You're really just kicking the can down the road," O'Brien said of communities that keep extending their deadlines. Bridgewater's retiree health trust has returned 16.99 percent annualized over three years, and its health insurance premiums rose 10 percent this year, about half the national average increase.
