Bridgewater panels reject firefighter arbitration funding
Other Committee 2026-08-04 Part 2 · Meeting of August 4, 2026
Bridgewater finance panels vote unanimously against funding a $1 million firefighter arbitration award. The Budget and Finance Committee (3-0) and the Finance Committee (5-0) both declined to recommend funding the Joint Labor Management Committee's June 26 award for the Bridgewater Firefighters Union, citing a compounding educational-incentive clause and risk to the town's $9,797,839 stabilization fund. "It's very dangerous to take a million dollars out of the stabilization account," said Finance Committee member Bill Wood.
The panels separately approved a $125,816 Lepecque Family Trust gift and a $110,000 Bridgewater State University gift, plus budget transfers to the library, tied to an Aug. 14 state accreditation deadline, and the assessor's office. Member Paul Murphy said he is drafting an order to create a dedicated committee to study a future Proposition 2½ override after a roughly $5 million override failed in 2025.
