Finance panels vote against funding fire award
Other Committee · Meeting of August 4, 2026
Bridgewater finance panels vote unanimously against funding a $1 million firefighter arbitration award. The Budget and Finance Committee and Finance Committee both rejected recommending the JLMC-ordered award, which included a compounding educational stipend of 5 to 7.5 percent that Town Councilor Paul Murphy called a "very dangerous precedent." Bill Wood, a former council budget chair, warned it's "very dangerous to take a million dollars out of the stabilization account," which holds $9,797,839. The same meeting accepted a $125,816 family trust gift and a $110,000 Bridgewater State University gift, approved a $56,000 library budget shift meant to preserve state accreditation and restore six-day hours in September, and heard Murphy's plan to create a committee exploring a future Proposition 2½ override.
